Signs of a Bad Catalytic Converter

I'll assume that you have a basic working knowledge of what a catalytic converter (cat) does and why it helps keep the environment more liveable for generations to come. Blah blah blah... Sometimes, cats can get plugged and end up doing some damage to the engine if left alone for too long a time.

Here are just a few of the signs and symptoms of a plugged/dead cat:
  1. Markedly decreased low rpm power,
  2. Engine runs a little hotter than normal at constant cruising speeds,
  3. Exhaust leaks near header that won't seal in spite of new gaskets,
  4. Bucking or hesitation while accelerating,
  5. Cat's exterior surface temp cooler near outlet.

If you notice any of these symptoms, get your car checked out by an expert. They'll be able to tell you for sure if you need a new cat.
