Custom In-Car Video Camera Mount
Not looking to spend $100 or more for an in-car video camera mount? You'd better not be! You can
better spend that money on worthwhile mods to your suspension! In all, the camera mount that I made
cost a total of $12 in materials not including the head. I'll try to get another design (by Alan
Zee) so you can pick whichever mount suits you. Use these measurements that I took f/ my car. All '88-'91
AE92 coupes with the base seats most likely have the same measurements--compare them to make sure.
Also, the industrial-sized camera mount you see isn't requisite--I borrowed it f/ my dad's nice Bogen
tripod and built the mount around it. It's stable as hell, but carries a decent weight penalty. I
know for sure that Bogen makes a much smaller camera mounting head cuz Alan Zee has one on his mount.
NOTE: The letter P in the diagram denotes headrest post locations.
My Version:
- Custom fit for '88-'91 AE92 GT-S with base seats (not equipped with Sport Seat option)
- U-bolts secure a single 3/4" hollow square tube (steel or aluminum) to the headrest posts
- U-bolts centered on headrest posts
- Lock washers used in conjunction with fasteners (nuts and backing plate) supplied with U-bolts
Materials Needed:
- 3/4" x 3' hollow square tube; aluminum or stainless steel... (Qty: x 1)
- Camera base mount; go to camera store and look for a small camera mount made by Bogen... (Qty: x 1)
- U-bolts and included fasteners (Qty: x 4)
- Lock washers to fit U-bolts/nuts (Qty: x 8)
- Bolt with appropriate length and thread for camera mount (Qty: x 1)
- Small, thin tabs of rubber to isolate camera mount from vibrations
- 3/4" plastic end caps to finish off the square tube's appearance (Qty: x 2)
- Safety strap to secure camera to mount (Qty: x 1)
Alan's Version:
- More of a universal fit--will work with any car that has exposed headrest posts
- Headrest posts are sandwiched between a 3/4" square tube and an L-bracket
- Wing nuts used with lock nuts allow quick removal
