Dyno Session

It seems like it's been quite a while since the Blue Bomber was just completed and the motor barked a mean growl (understandable since the exhaust was pretty much non-existent; it was left open before the cat) when we first started her up. After almost 2 years of debugging, modifying, and massaging the sedan and her drivetrain, it was time to see what she could do. Alan brought the Blue Bomber to Dyno Spot Racing for some dyno time to see the fruits of our labor, not to mention Alan's hard-earned money.

Keeping in mind that Alan's 4A-GZE is essentially the same as the '88-'89 AW11 S/C versions, we were hoping to see at least 140 hp at the wheels. Other AW11 S/Cs with similar setups were running about 150 hp at the wheels. Why'd we hope for 10 less horsepower? Easy--we knew that the fuel and ignition maps could stand some decent tuning time.

The baseline run alone pleasantly surprised and easily exceeded our expecations! How does 162.2 hp and 150.1 ft-lbs at the wheels sound?! Yeah, I thought so, too! One thing we were also expecting to see was the infamous low rpm, lean condition that most AW11 S/C owners experience; the Blue Bomber's A/F ratio curves looked pretty damn good from idle all the way to redline. After approximately one hour and 7 pulls on the dyno, another 8.2 hp and 5.6 ft-lbs was added for a total of 170.4 hp and 155.7 ft-lbs! What's even better is that the curves are really smooth with a nice, fat torque plateau.

Boo-yah! That's what I'm talking about!
