Tools & Materials

As with any major project, having the correct tools on hand will make things progress more efficiently. Plus, anything to make it easier on yourself is always an advantage. If you do your own work on your car, you should already have an assortment of different length sockets, though you can get by with shallow and deep sockets in both 3/8" and 1/2" sets.

Other tools of note:

  • 1/2" breaker bars
  • One short and one long pry bar
  • 5- or 10-lb slide hammer
  • 5-lb sledge hammer
  • 1/2" impact wrench; you only really need this for the axle nuts, but it'll make the whole job easier and quicker
  • High quality 3/8" click-type torque wrench with an accurate range of 5-80 ft-lbs
  • Digital Multimeter (DMM) with at least a 10 megaohm resistance capable of doing:
    - Continuity tests
    - Voltage readings
    - Resistance readings in different scales
  • Bribes of food and drink to coax your friends
  • Parts Manifest

    The Basics:

  • 4A-GZE engine from MR2 (complete JDM GTZ front cut would be best)
  • "Complete" wiring harness. Pretty much everything you can think of. If it's attached to the main harness in any way, grab it. If you don't think you need it, grab it. Don't forget the ECU
  • Factory Toyota Manuals (BGB) and Wiring Diagrams for MR2 and recipient car
  • Every little connector, wire, mount, sensor, etc., from the MR2 S/C's engine bay
  • Levin E51 transmission with axles or C52 (recommend a completely rebuilt unit), new CV boots from GTS, some nice Redline grease, and some new axle seals
  • Intercooler, associated piping, couplings. If you are using the Levin GTZ front cut, use the Levin top mount intercooler and hood with scoop. If using the AW11 setup, you have to either front mount or devise some other plan
  • All AE92 GTS engine mounts except the center mount that goes underneath the engine and onto the engine subframe
  • Every tool known to man. Just kidding, but the more tools you have access to, the better, especially air tools
  • Miscellaneous wires, heatshrink tubing, soldering gun with solder, extra terminals male and female
  • Engine hoist with leveler and engine stand
  • Miscellaneous heater and radiator hoses
  • 4A-GE downpipe
  • Plugs, cap, rotor, wires, etc., depending on condition of your donor car's parts
  • Oil cooler from AE92 GTS or an FX16 and associated lines
  • Assorted hose clamps for everything
  • Short piece of fuel line (rubber) to loop power steering lines in and out (if you have to get rid of it)
  • 02 sensor with gasket (89465-19295)
  • A portable fire extinguisher (No joke. Better to be safe than sorry)
  • And of course engine oil, gear oil, brake fluid, coolant, water, new filters, gas, etc.
  • If you plan on rebuilding the engine before she goes in, you'll also need:

  • 04111-16112 Overhaul gasket set
  • 95161-10519 Crank nose key
  • 15100-19036 Oil pump assembly
  • ARP fasteners for 4A-G
    - 203-5403 Main bearing studs
    - 203-6001 Con rod bolts
    - 203-4203 Head studs
    - 203-2802 Flywheel bolts
  • Main crank thrust washers
  • Main bearings
  • Connecting rod bearings
  • 13013-16090 0.5mm O/S piston ring set
  • 13103-16100 0.5mm O/S piston assemblies
  • Exhaust valves
  • Valve springs
  • Valve stem locks (AKA "keepers")
  • Timing belt idler pulley
  • If you are converting from Carburated to EFI, you'll also need:

  • Fuel Filter from 1988 Corolla GTS
  • High Pressure Fuel Line from 1990 Corolla LE
  • Fuel pump tube sub assembly (23091-16030)
  • Fuel Tank from 1990 Corolla LE
  • Fuel pump from Supra Turbo or N/A
  • Charcoal canister from 1990 Corolla LE
  • If you are converting from Automatic to 5 Speed, you'll also need:

  • Clutch pedal assembly
  • Brake pedal (it's smaller on the 5 speed)
  • Clutch master cylinder
  • Clutch slave cylinder
  • Hydraulic hardlines, all from a 5-speed AE92
  • Shifter cables
  • Complete shifter assembly
  • Clutchmasters Stage III clutch assembly or similar clutch with appropriately increased clamping force (needed for all the extra torque)
  • New throwout bearing (usually included with new clutches, but just in case)
  • If you feel like "upgrading" a few things, think about:

  • K+N cone filter with 3" mandrel bent tubing and HKS AFM adapter
  • Nevo oversized crank pulley, taking you from 8psi to 14psi!
  • KBD ceramic coated header
  • Stainless steel lines for oil cooler
  • High flow muffler and cat with mandrel bent 2.5"+ tubing
  • Back to GZE Main Page
